
Eagles Fall To App State, 7-0, In Softball Action Friday

Mountaineers break open a one-run game in the seventh; third game Saturday at 1 pm
STATESBORO - Appalachian State broke open a one-run game in the seventh inning to claim a 7-0 Sun Belt Conference softball victory over host Georgia Southern on Friday afternoon at Eagle Field.
With the win, the Mountaineers (12-6, 2-0 SBC) claims the Sun Belt series win from the Eagles (13-9, 0-2 SBC) in both teams' first league series of the year. It is also the first conference series win for Appalachian State over the Eagles since 2007 when both schools were still members of the SoCon.
Appalachian State scored a single run in the third inning on back-to-back doubles by Baylee Morton and Megan Walker. The 1-0 score remained until the seventh as both the Eagles' Rylee Waldrep and the Mountaineers' Sydney Holland were fantastic in the circle.
The game unraveled for the Eagles in the seventh as Appalachian State sent 11 players to the plate in a six-run inning.
Holland (5-4) hurled a complete-game three-hit shutout, walking three while striking out four, to notch the win for Appalachian State. Waldrep (3-5) took the loss for the Eagles, giving up six hits and three runs in 6 2/3 innings of work, walking one while striking out two.
Mekhia Freeman led the Eagles at the plate by reaching base three times, on a walk, a single and a hit by pitch. Walker led the Mountaineers with a 3-for-3 day that included her RBI double.
