
Baseball Evens Series at Arlington with 5-3 Saturday Win

ARLINGTON, TEXAS - Georgia Southern bounced back on Saturday with a 5-3 win over UT Arlington to even the series at one game each. Eagle pitching held the Mavericks to just six hits as freshman Braden Hays tossed five innings to earn his first collegiate win. The same teams battle again on Sunday at High Noon in Arlington in the rubber match.
SCORING INNINGS
BOT 1st | GS 0 - UTA 2 | UT Arlington got off to a hot start, plating two runs off two hits and an Eagle error. One of the two runs went down as unearned against starting pitcher Braden Hays.
BOT 4th | GS 0 - UTA 3 | The Mavericks played small ball after a leadoff hit batter and catcher's interference put a pair aboard with no outs. A sacrifice fly to center drove in the run to make it a 3-0 lead for the home side.
TOP 5th | GS 5 - UTA 3 | The Eagles got things going offensively in the fifth inning, hanging a five-spot on the Mavs on five hits while batting around. Matt Anderson and Blake Evans got singles to start the inning, followed by a one out single by Nolan Tressler that loaded the bases. Tyler Martin plated a run with a walk, a ground ball to first by Noah Ledford made it 3-2. Austin Thompson sent two runs home with a single to left to give the Eagles their first lead of the series. A wild pitch with two outs allowed Thompson to score and make it a five run frame.

- Freshman Braden Hays earned his first collegiate quality start on Saturday, matching a career high with five innings of work. He allowed three runs, one earned off three hits with two strikeouts to pick up his first collegiate win and improve to 1-3.
- Mason McWhorter and Jason Swan each had two hits in the game while Austin Thompson drove in a pair.
- Cole Whitney came in to pick up a four-inning save, scattering three hits over his scoreless innings of work. It was Whitney's third save of the year in as many attempts.
- Steven Curry went 0-for-4 with a walk to snap his team-high 10 game hit streak. Thompson now owns the team's longest active streak at seven games.
