Junior will swim in four meets at the invitational, sponsored by the CSCAA
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern junior swimmer Anna Moers will represent the Eagle Swimming & Diving program this week at the CSCAA's National Invitational Championship, taking place on March 14-16 at Cleveland State University in the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.
The meet is hosted by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America and features swimmers and divers who reached certain time or score thresholds throughout the season or won respective events at their conference championships.
Moers earned qualifying times in several events, most notably her school-record 54.66 swim in the 100 Backstroke, that allowed her to compete this week in Cleveland. In all, Moers will be swimming in four individual events - the 50 Backstroke, the 200 Backstroke, the 50 Freestyle and the 100 Individual Medley.
Training for the event just a couple of weeks after the Eagles competed at their CCSA Championships has been encouraging for Georgia Southern Head Coach Amanda Caldwell.
"I really like the second taper with her," Caldwell said, referring to the exercise routine swimmers undergo before a big competition. "She seemed to not be feeling as great, physically, going into conference and yet she still swam well. But she has looked better these last two weeks, and has swam faster in practice than she was going into conference.
"She has a lot more confidence, and looks a lot more relaxed," Caldwell said. "I'm pretty excited about the meet to see what she does."
The National Invitational Championship meet begins on Thursday, and Moers will swim in the 50 Backstroke and the 50 Freestyle that day, then have a day off on Friday before wrapping up action on Saturday with the 200 Backstroke and the 100 Individual Medley.
Coach Caldwell thinks that her strongest event this week will be the 50 Backstroke.
"In the 50 Backstroke, she's seeded eighth. But honestly, anyone that has a good day can do well," Caldwell said. "Although her 200 backstroke, that's the one that after the conference meet, she felt like she could have done a lot better on."
For her part, Moers agrees. And training for the NIC hasn't been that much different than when she prepared for the conference meet.
"I think it's a good opportunity for me to go and race again," Moers said. "I'm really excited. I think the 50 Back is my strongest event. Training has been pretty much the same as going into conference, just a little different coming back and having to re-taper, but I think it will be a good turnaround. I just have to stay focused, stay positive and try to get that adrenaline going within to do well."

Thursday and Saturday's preliminaries begin at 9:30 a.m. each day, with the finals sessions coming at 6 p.m. each day.
