Eagles head to Liberty University with an eye on a top three finish in Lynchburg
STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern Swimming & Diving team begins its conference championship chase tomorrow as the 2019 Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) meet takes place at the Liberty Natatorium, on the campus of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.
The four-day event begins with relay swims and diving action on Wednesday, then continues through Saturday. The Eagles will be competing against eight other schools that sponsor women's swimming and diving. First-year head coach Amanda Caldwell is happy with the progression her student-athletes have made this season heading into the conference meet.
"They definitely have gotten a lot more aerobic capacity than they had coming into the season," Coach Caldwell said. "One of our seniors, Bre Stuart, mentioned that she feels stronger and feels like she can finish races. And she's not alone. Our techniques look a lot better, and they're gaining a lot of confidence in what they're seeing going into the pool."
Last year, the Eagles earned 832 points at the CCSA Championships, finishing behind four-time defending team champion Florida Gulf Coast, Liberty and Gardner-Webb. Campbell, UNC Asheville, North Florida, Incarnate Word and Howard round out the field of teams competing this week.
"Our team has said that they want to get into the top three," Coach Caldwell said. "They don't want to finish fourth again. And I think that's an achievable goal. With everything that's gone on this season, we should be able to get third. Now I think they're going to have to really embrace it and they're going to have to work hard for it.
"Sometimes in races we're going to have our backs against the wall," Caldwell said. "Because we only have one person in the event and that's not a lot of points that we can score. But I know we're going to be constantly battling it out, and taking it race by race and dive by dive. I think our divers should all be in the top eight, in both boards, if not on the podium for top three. And I know our girls want a podium in those relays. Their relay exchanges lately have been good and I'm pretty excited to see what happens when they go after it together, as a group."
Overall, there will be 20 events over the four days. You can see a complete schedule of the events here. There are 13 individual swim events, five team relay swim events and two diving events that make up the meet.
The Big South Conference will be providing live video of the entire week's events. There will also be live results from the CCSA as well as dive-by-dive results from Divemeets.
