STATESBORO - Georgia Southern senior guard Alexis Brown has been named the Sun Belt Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, announced today by league officials.
Brown led the Eagles to their first two wins of the season, while reaching an important career milestone during the week. She became the 24th Georgia Southern women's basketball player to score 1,000 career points with the second of two free throws in the second quarter of Sunday's 70-57 win at Wofford. The Madison, Ga., native finished the contest with 19 points and 10 rebounds, capping a week that also saw Brown score 20 points in a 91-47 win at Winthrop on Tuesday.
For the week, Brown averaged 19.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game and was a perfect 15-of-15 from the free throw line. She is currently fourth in NCAA Division I in free throw percentage at 96.4% while averaging 12.7 points per game through the first six games of the season.
This is the third weekly honor for Brown as she was also the Sun Belt's Player of the Week twice during her junior season - on Dec. 18, 2018 and Jan. 21, 2019. She is the first Georgia Southern women's basketball player to earn conference weekly honors three times in a career since Nicole Newton was the SoCon Player of the Week three times from 2004-06.
Brown and the Eagles will be in search of their third win in a row on Saturday when they travel to Macon to take on the Mercer Bears at 2 p.m.
