Georgia Southern heads to Stetson Invitaional Nov. 1
TALLAHASSEE, Florida – The Georgia Southern women's tennis team concluded its trip to the ITA Southeast Regional Championship Friday night on the campus of Florida State University.
Due to heavy storms, the second, and final day for the Eagles was moved indoors. Entering the day, the team had three athletes remaining in the main singles draw. Nadja Meier, a freshman, would be the only athlete to advance in day two, defeating Alexandra Mjos (USF) 6-4, 6-2 before falling to Vivian Wolff (UGA) 6-0, 6-0. Paula Boixader lost Rosie Garcia Gross (GT) 6-0, 6-2 and Paula Hijos was defeated by Ma Lea (UGA) 6-1, 6-0 both in the first round.
What head coach Sean McCaffrey had to say:
"Overall, I believe we did well in the event and showed a lot of growth in handling some pressure situations where we had to focus on sticking with our individual game plans. Of course, we still have a lot to work on but there is so much we can learn from even after a tough loss."
"Friday proved to be a challenge as we ran into some really tough UGA and GA Tech players. Nadja did pick up a nice win against South Florida, but the draw certainly did not do us any favors as we ran into some of the top ranked players in the nation. This event shed some light on things these ladies would need to do in order to be able to challenge players of that caliber."
"We are eager to get back to work on Monday to prepare. There is a lot to be excited about with our team as we wrap up the fall season. We have a great deal of positive momentum and everyone is hungry and committed in fighting for a conference championship."
Key Moments:
Elizabeth Goines def. Alexia Alvarez (Ga. State) 7-6(2), 7-5 in the qualification singles bracket.
Hijos def win over Denisa Gheorghe (Ga. State) 6-4, 6-0 and Lourdes Ramalle (FGCU) 6-4, 7-6(4) in the qualification singles bracket to advance to the main draw.
Meier def. Alexandra Mjos (USF) 6-4, 6-2
The team now prepares for its final tournament of the fall at the Stetson Invitational Nov. 1-3.
