STATESBORO, Ga.– Melissa Cox has been named CCSA Female Swimmer of the Week and Abby Camarda has been named CCSA Female Diver of the Week, as announced Tuesday by the league.
Both athletes competed in Georgia Southern's season opener this past weekend against Queens (swimming only), Davidson and CCSA competitor, UNC Asheville.
Cox swam in three races for the Eagles. Her best race of the meet was the 50 Freestyle which she swam in 24.2, resulting a second-place finish and the Eagles' best finish of the meet. She was the fourth leg in the 400 Medley Relay helping the team finish with a time of 4:05.15 and a seventh-place finish. She also swam the 200 Freestyle Relay as the first leg. That relay team finished in sixth-place with a time of 1:42.96.
"Melissa loves to compete and embraces good competition," head coach Amanda Caldwell said. "What a great start of the season for her."
Camarda dove in both the 1 Meter and 3 Meter events for Georgia Southern. She finished second in both events finishing with a score of 235.85 in the 1 Meter dive and 251.1 in 3 Meter dive. These dives led the Eagles to a win over UNC Asheville and a tie with Davidson.
"Abby's performance this weekend laid a strong foundation which we are looking to build off of and I'm excited to see what the season has to offer," diving coach Collin Vest said.
The next event for Georgia Southern swimming and diving is their home opener for the season this weekend. The meet will be against Florida Gulf Coast University and Campbell at the RAC beginning at 12 p.m.
