Javier Carbonell Named Sun Belt Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

Senior tallied two goals and an assist in the Eagles' home opener Friday

STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern senior forward Javier Carbonell has been named the Sun Belt Conference's Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, announced today by league officials.

Carbonell delivered a pair of goals and an assist in the Eagles' 3-0 home-opening win over North Florida on Friday, the first win for Georgia Southern in a home opener since 2011. The Madrid, Spain, native is the first GS men's soccer player to score multiple goals in consecutive matches since Oct. 27 & 31, 2004, when Lawrence Smith had two goals vs. CofC and Elon. Carbonell currently leads the Sun Belt Conference in points (10) and shots taken (12), while sitting tied for the lead in goals scored (4).

This is the third career weekly honor for Carbonell, who was the Sun Belt's Newcomer of the Year as a junior transfer in 2017. He was the league's Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 19 and November 7th last season. Click here to view the complete weekly men's soccer release from the Sun Belt Conference.

"Javi has picked up where he left off last year with a strong start to the 2018 season," Georgia Southern Head Coach John Murphy said. "His work rate and energy has made a big impact on our young team thus far. Additionally, he has become more of a leader this season, and his strong performances reflect this."

Carbonell and the Eagles, who moved up to No. 3 in the latest United Soccer Coaches' Southeast Region rankings this week, return to action on Friday, hosting Florida Gulf Coast in a 7 p.m. non-conference contest at Ealge FIeld. The match will be broadcast on ESPN3.
