CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina softball took game one of a Sun Belt Conference series from visiting Georgia Southern, 13-5, in six innings on Saturday in Conway. The second game was halted in the sixth inning due to rain with the Chanticleers leading, 3-0, and will be resumed on Sunday.
Coastal Carolina (19-20, 3-10 SBC) won its second straight game in the opener, while the Eagles (21-15, 6-7 SBC) saw its current slide reach seven games. The resumption of the second game will be at Noon on Sunday, with the final game to take place 30 minutes following the completion of game two.
The Chanticleers used a five-run second inning, highlighted by a two-run triple from Courtney Dean, to take a 5-0 lead. Mekhia Freeman got the Eagles on the board with an RBI single in the third, but Coastal Carolina added another five-run frame in the fourth to build a 10-1 lead.
The Eagles plated four runs in the top of the fifth on an error, RBI singles from Logan Harrell and Hannah Farrell, as well as a bases-loaded walk drawn by Macy Coleman, to make the score 10-5. Coastal Carolina ended the game with three runs in the sixth.
Ashley Guilette (10-9) picked up the win for the Chanticleers, giving up seven hits and five runs in 4 2/3 innings of work, walking three while striking out two. Kierra Camp (10-7) took the loss for the Eagles, giving up six hits and eight runs in three-plus innings of work, walking five and striking out one.
Game two saw the Chanticleers take a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Alexis Alvino, then build that lead to 3-0 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. The game was halted in the middle of the sixth inning due to rain.
