Eagles Back On Track, Sweep Weekend Matches

Men's Tennis sweeps weekend matches to extend winning streak to five

STATESBORO, Ga. – Sunday afternoon the Eagles wrapped up their final matches of the weekend with two victories in Statesboro. The Blue and White began the morning at Mill Creek Park playing Chattanooga and defeating the Mocs 7-0. The Eagles had a quick turn around and played the Bulldogs of South Carolina State at the Wallis Tennis Center. The Blue and White struggled early in singles play, dropping five of the six first sets.

The Eagles extended their winning streak to five with the weekend sweep and will be looking to continue that next weekend against Kennesaw State and Alabama State. The Blue and White won 13 of 15 during the month of March last season.

WHAT HEAD COACH KONING SAID
"I think we did a good job this entire weekend, to have a similar mindset all the way through no matter who we played. That was the goal for this weekend, no matter who we play this weekend we had to have the similar mindset and compete. The guys really did that well, especially the last match against South Carolina State. That is a good talented team and of course it was our fourth match of the weekend, so it was like okay are you willing to bring what it takes to win. We dropped four first sets and we came back and won three of those matches. Because we did that we were able to win the match. Santi has been a big part of our team, not only on the court, but off the court as well. He is a really positive guy and he really gets his teammates going. He has been struggling a little bit this semester with injuries, but he still believes. He allows himself to have opportunities and it was really important for him to win this match."

WHAT Santiago Suarez SAID
"This weekend overall we knew would be a tough weekend, with four matches in two days. We have never done that since I have been here. It was hard work during the week and it allowed us to be mentally and physically prepared for these matches. Of course every match we had the right mindset that we wanted to have, which is something that we have been working on since starting the season not how we wanted. We have gotten to a point that we are able to fight and get the results we want now in our game. The second day of the doubleheader was hard since we had such a short break in-between matches. In doubles the guys took care of it pretty fast, then in singles everyone was really struggling and exhausted. I think we only won one first set on all six courts. We were prepared for it mentally and physically and Coach Koning has been very patient and has been implementing new things that have been working for us lately."
