STATESBORO, Ga. - Junior
Macy Coleman's walk-off two-run double in the seventh capped a day of late-inning heroics for Georgia Southern softball in a Sun Belt Conference doubleheader sweep of visiting UL Monroe on Saturday at Eagle Park. The Eagles won game one, 11-9, and took game two, 7-6.
The win ensures a Sun Belt series win for a third straight weekend for Georgia Southern (21-9, 6-2 SBC), while the Warhawks slip to 12-13 overall and 2-6 in the Sun Belt with the loss. The final game of the series will take place on Sunday at Noon.
"It's a good day to be an Eagle," Georgia Southern Head Coach
Kim Dean said. "These were two hard-fought games, and we got some timely hitting to come away with the win. Our kids believed in each other, and being able to execute late in the game was the difference. We still need to tighten up a bit on defense. Our pitchers found a way today, and all in all I'm very proud of the wins. Looking forward to tomorrow."
Offensive explosions started off the first game of the day as UL Monroe plated three runs in the top of the first inning, but Georgia Southern answered by sending 12 batters to the plate in a seven-run bottom of the first inning, highlighted by back-to-back home runs from
Logan Harrell and
Allyssah Mullis. The Eagles tacked on a run in the second inning on an RBI single from
Macy Coleman, but the Warhawks drew within one thanks to a third-inning grand slam from Brie Wrobel.
A single run in the fifth on a solo shot from Coleman put the Eagles up by two, 9-7, but ULM answered in the top of the sixth with RBI singles from Hunter Hogan and Ana Hogan, tying the game up at 9-all. In the bottom of the sixth, Mullis broke the deadlock with an RBI single, then
Mekhia Freeman followed with an RBI double for the two-run lead. Reliever
Kaylee Ramos set down the Warhawks in order in the seventh to close out the game one win.
Ramos (2-1) hurled four innings of five-hit ball, giving up a pair of unearned runs to notch the win in relief. She walked one and struck out two. Jesse Watts (4-3) took the loss in relief for ULM, giving up 12 hits and seven runs - five earned - in 5 2/3 innings of work, walking one and striking out one.
In game two, it was a tale of big innings leading to Coleman's seventh-inning heroics. ULM scored three runs in the second on a bases-loaded walk, a bases-loaded hit by pitch and an RBI single by Rochelle Roberts for an early 3-0 lead. Georgia Southern answered with a five-run third inning, thanks to an RBI double by
Logan Harrell, a two-run double by Mullis and a two-run home run by
Hannah Farrell, her team-leading and Sun Belt-leading eighth of the year.
The Warhawks put up a three-run fifth inning to retake the lead, the go-ahead run coming on an RBI single by the Sun Belt's leading hitter, Sydney McKay.
The bottom of the seventh saw the Eagles put two on thanks to sharp singles by Mullis and Farrell with one out.
Mekhia Freeman flew out to left, leaving it up to Coleman, whose line shot up the gap in left center rolled all the way to the fence, allowing both runners to score for the walk-off.
Rylee Waldrep (9-3) notched the win in relief for the Eagles in game two, hurling five innings of six-hit ball, giving up three runs - one earned - and walking one while striking out one. Paige Murray (5-3) took the loss in game two for the Warhawks, giving up 11 hits and seven runs in 6 2/3 innings, walking two while striking out four.
