GS Softball Falls To Top-Ranked Florida, 8-0, On Sunday

Eagles wrap up action at the Aquafina Invitational with a 3-2 mark; head to Lipscomb next weekend

Box Score

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Georgia Southern softball squad wrapped up action at the UF Aquafina Invitational on Sunday, falling to top-ranked and host Florida, 8-0, in five innings in Gainesville.

The Eagles (10-4) finished the Aquafina Invitational with a 3-2 mark, while Florida (16-1) went a perfect 6-0 in its own tournament. Georgia Southern returns to action on March 2, traveling to the Lipscomb Purple & Gold Challenge in Nashville, Tenn.

"We're happy with the overall experience we had this weekend in Gainesville," Georgia Southern Head Coach Kim Dean said. "We will use our losses from the tournament to help us prepare for upcoming games and for Sun Belt play. We are also looking forward to another challenging tournament this weekend in Nashville at Lipscomb."

Sunday's meeting was the third for Georgia Southern against a top-ranked team. The previous two meetings had been one-run games - a 2-1 loss in nine innings to Alabama in 2013 and a 1-0 loss to Tennessee in 2014 - but this meeting would be different as Florida plated three runs in the bottom of the first - on an RBI double by Amanda Lorenz, an error and a bases-loaded walk by Eagle starter Kierra Camp (6-2).

The Gators got another RBI double by Lorenz in the second inning, then put the game out of reach in the third on an RBI single by Hannah Adams and a three-run shot by Lorenz.

Reigning National Player of the Year Kelly Barnhill (7-0) faced the minimum through five innings to notch the win, striking out 11. Camp took the loss for the Eagles, giving up five hits and eight runs - six earned - in 2 2/3 innings, walking six and striking out one. Kaylee Ramos entered the game in the third and hurled 1 1/3 innings of perfect relief against the Gators.
