MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. - A pair of home runs in the fourth inning and a brilliant effort in the circle helped the Georgia Southern softball team claim a share of the Madeira Beach Invitational with a 5-0 win Sunday over host Eastern Michigan to finish the event with a 4-1 record.
Georgia Southern got on the board in the second inning thanks to the middle of the order producing.
Hannah Farrell walked and moved to third base on
Alesha Mann's double to center before
Allyssah Mullis drove in Farrell with a single to left field. In the fourth inning,
Macy Coleman ripped a solo shot to center field to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Mann went opposite field for a solo home run, her second in as many games.
In the fifth inning, Farrell singled and Mann drew a walk allowing Mullis to step to the plate. The freshman picked up her second RBI single to drive in Farrell and make it 4-0. In the sixth stanza,
India Davis was hit by a pitch and moved up on
Shelby Wilson's sacrifce bunt and then
Mekhia Freeman knocked her in with a single.
Mullis led the way with a career-high three hits and two RBI while Mann had two hits. Coleman, Freeman and Farrell both chipped in one as the Eagles put forth an effective offensive attack
Freshman
Rylee Waldrep (W, 2-1) was sensational in the circle, tossing her first collegiate shut out. She allowed just four singles and a walk while striking out six.
The Eagles (7-2) will be back in action next weekend, traveling to Gainesville, Florida, for the Aquafina Invitational hosted by second-ranked Florida. The Eagles are scheduled to take on Iowa State, Illinois State, Maryland and the host Gators.
