Box Score 2 MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. - The Georgia Southern softball team split a pair of games on the opening day of the Madeira Beach Invitational, pulling out a 4-2 win over Jacksonville State before falling to Monmouth 9-4 in the second game of the day.
In the opener,
Logan Harrell came through in the clutch, driving in a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to score the winning runs in a 4-2 victory over Jacksonville State. In the night cap, the Eagles rallied from an early four-run deficit to tie the game up, but the hard-hitting Hawks were too much for the Eagles in pulling away for the win.
GS 4, JSU 2
In a pitcher's dual, the Eagles finally got on the board in the fourth inning, loading the bases up before
Sydney Fisher's RBI groundout plated
Shelby Wilson to make it 1-0. In the top of the fifth inning,
India Davis drew a leadoff walk and moved to second base on
Alesha Mann's single before scoring on Wilson's double to the gap.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, JSU finally got on the board with a two-out single down the line to plate a pair of runs and tie it up.
In the top of the seventh inning,
Haley Carter singled to lead off the inning before moving to third base on walks from
Mekhia Freeman and Wilson. On a 2-2 pitch with two outs,
Logan Harrell stroked one to right field to plate the two lead runners and make it 4-2.
Kierra Camp got out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh frame as the Eagles held on for the win.
Camp (W, 3-0) went the distance, allowing two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts against one walk.
At the plate, Harrell led the way with two hits and two RBIs while Freeman, Carter, Fisher, Mann and Wilson each had a hit for the Eagles. Wilson also drew three walks in the game.
MU 9, GS 4
In the second game, Monmouth got off to a quick start, using two hits and a double steal to score one and then cleared the bases on a double to make it 4-0 in the first inning.
After coming close in the first two innings, the Eagles finally broke through in a big way.
Alesha Mann walked to lead off the inning and moved up on Wilson hard infield single. Mann scored on Harrell's single and then Wilson scored on
Hannah Farrell's single. With
Hannah Scarbrough pinch running for Farrell,
Macy Coleman ripped a double to the gap to plate both runners and tie up the game.
The Hawks responded right back in the top of the fourth inning, leading off with a double and then a two-run home run to take a 6-4 lead. The Hawks added a pair of runs in the fifth inning to re-up the lead back to four runs and the Eagles weren't able to come back this time, falling to 4-2 on the young season.
Coleman led the way with three hits while Harrell chipped in two. Carter, Wilson and Farrell all had one.
Freshman
Rylee Waldrep (L, 1-1) went 4.0 innings, allowing six runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Heather Felt went the final 3.0 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits with a walk.
The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, taking on UMKC at 1:30 p.m. and then Abilene Christin at 6:30 p.m.
