Eagles receive 39 points in the preseason vote of the league's coaches; open season Nov. 6
NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Georgia Southern women's basketball team has been picked to finish 10th in the upcoming 2018-19 Sun Belt Conference season, according to a vote of the league's coaches released today.
The Eagles received 39 points in the poll of the 12 Sun Belt head coaches, tied with Georgia State. Defending champion Little Rock was picked to finish first, receiving 133 points and eight first-place votes, with Troy picked second, receiving 131 points and four first-place votes.
Texas State and UTA (97 points) were picked third, with Arkansas State (95) fifth and South Alabama (78) sixth. Louisiana (75), Coastal Carolina (72) and Appalachian State (67) appear before the Eagles, with ULM (13) rounding out the poll.
Georgia Southern did not have a player picked on the first, second or third-team Preseason All-Conference squad, also released today.
"It's a very competitive league," Georgia Southern Head Coach Kip Drown said. "I think you talk to any coach in the league, they'll tell you any given night anyone can step up and beat each other. I'm not surprised where we were put, but it doesn't reflect where we have a chance to go this year."
The Eagles return seven players overall and two starters from last season's squad that went 5-25 overall and 2-16 in the Sun Belt. Georgia Southern will enter the 2018-19 season with no seniors on the roster and is one of only eight schools in NCAA Division I this year without a senior or a redshirt junior on the roster.
"Preseason practice has gone well," Drown said. "We have a group of kids who have been in the program before, and we have a group who are new and learning. I like where we are. We've got a long way to go, but everyone does. Our best basketball is coming down the road, and we hope to start off really well when we open the season two weeks from now."
