Donations to the Foundation benefit student-athlete scholarships
However, there is a cost to a college education. Fortunately, the Georgia Southern University Athletic Foundation and much of Eagle Nation have committed to provide the funds necessary for student-athletes to attend Georgia Southern University.
On Saturday, September 29, 2018, Georgia Southern students, family, fans and friends celebrated not only a win against Arkansas State but also the $1,178,000 that the Athletic Foundation presented to the University. Georgia Southern University Athletic Foundation Chairman Walt Huggins, alongside Foundation board members, presented University President Shelley Nickel and Athletic Director Tom Kleinlein with the largest amount of scholarship support ever given to the University by the Foundation.
Student-athlete scholarship funds are primarily raised through the Eagle Fund, the Foundation's annual fund. The Eagle Fund helps Athletics' offset the $5,732,088 they must pay the University to cover tuition and other fees associated with college expenses for Georgia Southern's nearly 400 student-athletes.
With the help of the Georgia Southern University and Bulloch County communities, the Eagle Fund continues to grow. The lowest giving level is $120. At just $10 a month, the Eagle Fund is designed to provide membership opportunities for all of Eagle Nation.
Georgia Southern's student-athletes don't take their educational opportunity for granted. Our student-athletes earned a department-wide 3.048 GPA for the 2017-18 academic year, the highest mark in department history. This achievement is the third-consecutive year the student-athletes have reached the 3.0 threshold. During the spring semester, over half of our student-athletes earned a spot on the Honor Roll, and twelve of the fifteen programs posted a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Additionally, Georgia Southern student-athletes' academics were recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), Southern Conference, Sun Belt Conference, Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) and Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) - just to name a few.
