NORMAN, Okla. – The Georgia Southern men's golf team was named a Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) All-Academic Team after posting a team grade point average of 3.48 for the 2016-17 academic year.
It was the highest GPA in program history and the highest of the Eagle male sports programs last season. The men's golf program has posted the highest male GPA at Georgia Southern for the last two years and earns the GCAA All-Academic nod for the second straight season.
All nine members of the team posted a GPA over 3.0, while
Luukas Alakulppi notched a 4.0.
Jonas Vaisanen and
Crawford Simmons each had 3.8 grade point averages.
"Exceling in the classroom is one of the foundations of our program, and achieving this award is one of our annual goals so I'm so proud of this team's accomplishment," said head coach
Carter Collins. "In addition, we are extremely appreciative of the job that Ashleigh Rasheed and
Reggie Simpkins do in Student-Athlete Services in helping our team with our academics and constantly challenging them to be at their best."
The Eagles got the job done on the course as well as Georgia Southern finished in the top-4 of four consecutive prestigious events, capped by a second-place outing in the Sun Belt Championship, in the spring.
Steven Fisk and
Jake Storey tied for first at the conference championship and earned all-conference honors along with
Archer Price. Storey was also name the Sun Belt Men's Golfer of the Year, and Georgia Southern advanced to the NCAA Championships for the 24th time in program history and seventh time in the last 10 seasons.
A total of 187 teams across all divisions of collegiate golf submitted GPAs of 3.00 or higher to earn All-Academic Team recognition. A total of 39 teams received President's Special Recognition status for having team GPAs of 3.5 or better.
To be eligible for GCAA All-Academic Team honors, a college or university must submit the GPAs for each player on its official squad list for the academic year.
