The passion for baseball in the Dominican Republic is unmatched. The need to support their community is impossible to avoid.
Georgia Southern Baseball is headed to the Dominican Republic from November 18 to 22, 2017, to train with high-caliber baseball teams in the Dominican Republic while serving the local community.
The trip will consist of playing baseball against some exceptional teams, service projects with the local community, running a youth baseball camp and having the opportunity to grow through FCA and AIA staff. These experiences will challenge the student-athletes mentally, physically and spiritually, and help them to gain a proper perspective on such topics as motivation, attitude, winning and losing and persevering through tough times.
"As the head the baseball coach, my purpose through the game of baseball is to develop men that will lead and love others through the power of faith and family. I'm constantly trying to provide opportunities for growth throughout their college experience, and this trip will be a tremendous opportunity to accomplish that." said head baseball coach Rodney Hennon.
Why the Dominican Republic? The small country has many baseball teams concentrated within close proximity that are capable of providing a high level of competition for college baseball teams. These teams include all 30 Major League Baseball affiliates, Dominican Winter League teams and Dominican Military teams. The passion for baseball in the Dominican Republic is unparalleled. Children are constantly playing pickup games in the street, adults carry animated conversations regarding the game and there is visual evidence of the many MLB players who hail from the Dominican Republic.
The trip will be the catalyst for the Georgia Southern baseball team to bond and work together before the 2018 season. This once in a lifetime experience will provide the students worldly perspective and allow them to grow together as a team.
To help with the expense of the trip, Eagle Baseball has launched a crowdfunding campaign with the help of the Athletic Foundation. Donations can be made up until the team leaves for the trip. Only five weeks remain for the Eagle Nation community to specifically invest in these students-athletes' lives and help meet their goal of raising $26,000. The cost for each player is $1,600 and includes airfare, ground transportation, meals, hotel accommodations, baseball activities and tours.
Donate today at Give.GSEagles.com/Baseball and share this fundraising link to support Eagle Baseball. Contributions can even be made in honor or memory of someone and donations can be made as a one-time gift or broken into monthly payments.
