Top Players Returning
New Mexico State returns 38 lettermen in 2016, including one of the top rushers in the Sun Belt. Junior running back Larry Rose III (12 GP, 240-1714 yds, 6.9 avg, 14 TDs) led the Sun Belt in rushing yards in 2015. Rose also finished third on the team in receptions (30-283 yds, 9.4 avg, 2 TDs), but he was only fifth in receiving yards. With the early departure of the Aggies' leading receiver last year, junior wide receiver Tyrian Taylor (12 GP, 39-543 yds, 17.7 avg, 4 TDs) will have to step up as the primary target. Taylor finished second in receptions and receiving yards for the team. NMSU returns its top four tacklers from last season, with junior linebacker Derek Ibekwe (12 GP, 92 total tackles, 1 FF), junior cornerback Jacob Nwangwa (12 GP, 85 total tackles, 3 INTs, 1 FF, 1 FR), and sophomore cornerback Terrill Hanks (12 GP, 81 total tackles, 3 INTs, 1 FF, 1 FR) all breaking 80 tackles. Taylor and Nwangwa led the team in interceptions, with Nwangwa taking one interception for a 41-yard touchdown.
