Men’s Soccer Works To Scoreless Draw At Coastal Carolina

Eagles earn their third positive result in as many games

CONWAY, S.C. – The Georgia Southern men's soccer team endured 22 shots by Coastal Carolina Saturday night on the road, but the Eagles stood resilient as they earned the second clean sheet of the season and played to a draw with the Sun Belt Conference newcomers. The 0-0 draw earned both teams one point towards the conference standings. Georgia Southern is currently tied atop the league standings with Appalachian State and Hartwick with four points.

Saturday night's draw was the third positive result in as many games for the Eagles and is the longest such streak by GS dating back to three wins early in the 2014 season. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Torgeir Fjaer earned his second shutout of the season and recorded seven saves between the pipes for the Eagles to improve to 4-3-2 on the year. The Eagles took 10 shots and had six corners compared to eight by the perennially strong Chanticleers.

MATCH FACTS
Georgia Southern (6-5-2, 1-0-1 Sun Belt) – 0
Coastal Carolina (4-5-3, 0-1-1 Sun Belt) – 0

NOTES
- Georgia Southern is now 2-3-1 all-time against Coastal Carolina, including 1-2-1 in Conway. Saturday night's match was the first meeting between the two as Sun Belt foes and the first match since the 1998 season.
- Georgia Southern's current streak of three positive results in a row is the longest streak by the Eagles since the 2014 season.  The 2014 Eagles earned three wins in a row from Sept. 12 through Sept. 23, with the final win coming over Presbyterian College on the road. Prior to that, the 2011 Eagles earned four positive results in four straight games from Sept. 3 through Sept. 14. Ironically, that streak in 2011 began with a draw against Gardner-Webb and ended after a win over Presbyterian. Georgia Southern's current streak includes a win over the Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb and the next opponent is Presbyterian.
- The 22 shots taken by Coastal Carolina are the second-most by a GS opponent. Only South Carolina has taken more (27) against the Eagles.
- The eight Chanticleer corner kicks is tied for the second-most this season by a GS opponent. Jacksonville also took eight corners earlier this season against the Eagles and North Florida took nine.
- Coastal Carolina has been one of the stronger teams in men's soccer under head coach Shaun Docking. With Docking at the helm of the program since 1998, the Chants have won 17 Big South Conference titles and have made 11 trips to the NCAA Tournament, including each of the last six years.

QUOTE FROM COACH JOHN MURPHY
"Despite what the score line may say, it was really an exciting game. Coastal Carolina has traditionally had a very strong program; at home they have been very difficult to play against and tonight was no exception to that. I felt that we were quite resilient; any time you can get a clean sheet on the road it's a huge positive.

"I thought Torgeir in goal was fantastic and made some big-time saves for us. This was definitely his best game of the year. The back line – Emil Laursen, Justin Little, Rasmus Juul – played very strong the entire game. Hunter Loyden was great in the midfield for us tonight, as well and I thought Blake Wilson had one of his best games of the year, despite not scoring a goal. Overall, it was a very good effort by the entire team and it puts us in a very good spot in the conference. Now, we have to get ready for a short turnaround before playing Presbyterian on the road. We just need to keep this series of good performances going."

NEXT UP
Georgia Southern will next travel to Clinton, S.C. to take on the Blue Hose of Presbyterian College on Tuesday, Oct. 18 before returning home for a crucial conference showdown with Hartwick on Saturday, Oct. 22. The Eagles and Blue Hose will kick off at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
