DAVIDSON, N.C.- In the first match of the season, the Georgia Southern men's tennis team slid past Davidson to win 4-3 to open up the spring on Saturday. It was a nail bitter up until the end, as the doubles and singles points were both dictated by the last matches.

"It was a hard fought win," head coach Sander Koning said.

Senior Rise Lanne and junior Chris Kerrigan secured the last doubles match to clinch the extra point and put the Eagles up 1-0.

"Rise and Chris battled through the set and they executed very well in the tiebreak and won it," Koning said.

Both teams ended up three-all and the tiebreaking point boiled down to freshman Andre Johnson's match against Jack Riazzi at No. 6. Like the upperclassmen, Johnson was able to pull through for the Eagles to win in straight sets (7-6, 7-5) and hand the team a 4-3 finish.

"Andre was very poised all throughout his match, and this was the difference between him and his opponent," Koning said. "He was able to step up his game at critical moments,"

Sophomore Eddie Landin played solid today, coming back from an early deficit to earn the singles point at No. 3. Landin and Nico de Groof also downed Davidson in doubles, beating Alex Howard and Evan Watkins 6-4. Along with Landin, Lanne picked up points in both areas, downing Artem Khrapko at No. 1 6-2, 6-2.

Overall a good team win and we are now looking towards playing Gardner-Webb, which will be outdoors so I expect another competitive match," Koning said.
