CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Georgia Southern men's tennis team opened up its season at the Charlotte Invitational, with all four freshmen winning matches in their first collegiate competition at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. Three other teams joined the Eagles in the field including the host Charlotte 49ers, James Madison and Wofford. Sophomore Eddie Landin had an impressive weekend, snagging the title in Flight 3 by winning all three singles matches.
WHAT COACH SANDER KONING SAID:
On the weekend…
"We competed well this entire weekend. We worked a lot on our conditioning the last couple of weeks and it was very visible, because we actually got better as the weekend progressed. Overall we improved every day, and this weekend gave us a good indication of what we need to work on to achieve our team goal this season."
On the freshmen…
"The freshmen got a good taste of the level in college tennis and all of them won matches. This should work as a motivator to work hard in practice and get better."
On Eddie Landin…
"Eddie has been working hard on his game and this tournament he kept staying in the process and got the results. Last semester he didn't always get the result but he believed in the process and this weekend his determination paid off. This should give him confidence to keep improving his game and he was a great example for the freshmen. Eddie showed what hard work and determination can lead to."
WHAT EDDIE LANDIN SAID:
On the weekend…
"It was a successful weekend for me as I won my three singles and two doubles out of three that I played. I have to thank my teammates and my coaching staff because they were a big part of my victories; they were supporting me in and outside the court when I was playing. The energy from my teammates was excellent. It was very contagious when they were cheering for our team."
On the freshmen's performance…
"In addition, It was a good weekend for the freshmen, they got to learn more about college tennis and the level that we play in. They got some Ws from their matches, this will make them get more confidence with their game and it will be easier for them to win in the future matches."
On his improvement from last season…
"Some of the major changes that I have noticed in my game is that I'm able to recognize my opponents' weaknesses quickly. I have also been able to use wisely all my strengths in a match to take control of the key points during the match."
