The Eagles travel to Charlotte this weekend
STATESBORO, Ga.- The Georgia Southern men's tennis team opens up the 2015-16 season at the three-day Charlotte Invitational Sept. 18-20. The tournament takes place at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex and is hosted by the UNC Charlotte 49ers, who went 18-4 last season.
"The team is excited to get back on the court and get playing again," head coach Sander Koning said. "There's a lot of new things going on and we're trying to establish the culture of the team right away with always fighting and never giving up."
The Eagles return seven players, including Ristomatti Lanne, the 5-11 senior from Kangasala, Finland, who won 13 of 20 matches last season at the No. 1 spot. With five new freshmen, a new assistant coach and Koning's first full year as head coach, the team looks to the veterans to lead by example. At the Charlotte Invitational, the squad is split 50-50 with four upperclassmen and four freshmen representing the Blue and White.
"It's the first tournament for the returners to show the freshmen what we're all about," Koning said. "It's a good tournament for the guys to see what's expected of them. It really comes down to giving (the freshmen) experience."
After this weekend, the squad has a break until October, where it will compete in the Mercer Gridiron Classic in Macon, Georgia.
