Volleyball Tops Chicago State in SpringHill Suites Bash in the Boro

The Eagles play host to Savannah State Tuesday in Hanner

STATESBORO, Ga. – Megan Chevalier stuffed the stat sheet to the tune of 27 kills, eight digs, three blocks and three aces to lead Georgia Southern to a 3-1 (28-26, 25-16, 23-25, 25-17) volleyball victory over Chicago State in the SpringHill Suites Bash in the Boro Saturday morning in Hanner Fieldhouse.

The sophomore right side posted career highs in kills and digs en route to earning all-tournament honors. Stephanie Spencer collected 12 kills and six digs for the Eagles (4-6), and Ashley Jones posted 10 kills.

Kat Minnerly and Katie Bange each tallied 25 assists, and Alex Beecher logged 18 digs.

All-tournament selection Elli Woinowsky collected 16 kills and 12 digs to lead Chicago State (0-9), while Arieta Vaimaona had 12 kills and a pair of blocks.

The storyline
Trailing 23-21 in the first set, the Eagles rallied for two straight points behind a Chevalier kill and a block by Bange and Lauren Reichard. Georgia Southern fought off two set points, and then with the score tied 26-26, Chevalier put down consecutive kills for the 28-26 win. After Georgia Southern won the second set, Vaimaona broke a 23-23 tie in the third set with a kill and followed that with a solo block to pull the Cougars within 2-1 in the match. Georgia Southern put its foot on the gas in the fourth and hit .424 with 16 kills and just two errors. The Eagles jumped out to a 9-3 lead and never looked back, extending the margin to as many as 11 points at 21-10.

Quotable from Coach Dustin Wood
"Megan was a workhorse for us today. She did everything. We tinkered with the lineup today trying to find the right mix going into conference play. We're looking for more consistency offensively. We were put in a lot of pressure situations today and handled them well, pushing through adversity. We're looking to build on that Tuesday when we host Savannah State."
