The Eagles open the season at the FAU Invitational Aug. 28.
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern volleyball team is eager to put last season behind them, and it has shown in their first week of preseason practice.
"They came in ready to go," said Georgia Southern coach Dustin Wood. "The competitive level has gone up, and our main focus is constructive competition. They are handling it pretty well."
Three key junior student-athletes missed the bulk of last season and are chomping at the bit to get back to match competition. Libero Alex Beecher missed the entire season, while middle Crysten Curry and right side Katie Bange suffered injuries early in the 2014 campaign and redshirted the season. Having them on the court has raised the level of play and provided leadership to a squad with eight newcomers.
"Everybody is looking to them, and the good thing is that they are holding each other accountable," said Wood. "That makes our job as a staff much easier. It's been a great culture and attitude, and we've had a good six days."
With two weeks left until the season opener against Binghamton in the FAU Invitational Aug. 28, Wood hopes to fine tune the fundamentals and that the student-athletes develop good on-court chemistry.
"We're trying to work on the little details and the building block things, especially with our defense and blocking structure," said Wood. "On offense, we'll start throwing more things in as we go along, but we want to make sure our connections with the setter are good and we understand what we want out of the offense by the first game. I think we're ahead of schedule but we need to tidy things up."
The Eagles play four matches in Boca Raton, Fla., on opening weekend. In addition to the Bearcats, Georgia Southern faces Stetson, Bethune-Cookman and tournament host Florida Atlantic.
