CLEMSON, S.C. – Chris Okey hit a solo home run to break a tie game in the eighth inning and lift the Clemson Tigers to a 5-4 win over the Georgia Southern Eagles in game two of the series.
The Eagles (27-23) rallied from an early 2-0 hole and led 4-3 after scoring two runs in the top of the sixth inning on a solo home run from
Ryan Cleveland and a two-out error by the third baseman Weston Wilson.
The Tigers (27-24) tied the game in the bottom half of the frame on an error by Georgia Southern third baseman
Cody Lanford before Okey hit his 10th home run of the year to snap the 4-4 tie.
Zack Erwin gave up four runs – one earned – over eight innings but picked up the victory. Erwin (5-4) struck out a season-high 11 batters and walked just one while allowing five hits.
Ryan Frederick was tagged with the loss after allowing the home run in the eighth inning. Frederick (2-1) allowed one hit and struck out a batter over an inning.
Jason Richman entered in the fifth inning and stranded a pair of base runners with a ground out to keep Clemson from extending a 3-2 lead. Richman allowed an unearned run over 2.1 innings and struck out Reed Rohlman to end the seventh inning.
The Tigers led 2-0 after the first inning, scoring a pair of unearned runs off of Eagle starter
Tripp Sheppard. Rohlman singled through the left side to plate the first run of the game before Okey flew out to right field to drive in Tyler Krieger.
GS tied the game in the second inning on a
Logan Baldwin two-RBI single to center field.
The three-game series concludes tomorrow with a 1 p.m. first pitch. Freshman lefthander
Connor Simmons will get the call. The Tigers will counter with righthander Jake Long.
