4/30/2015 11:28:00 AM | Men's Golf
STATESBORO, Ga. – Fresh off their ninth conference championship, the Georgia Southern men's golf team will learn the field and destination of its next tournament Monday, May 4.
The 2015 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships selections will be announced live on the Golf Channel from 10-11 a.m. during Morning Drive, the network's daily morning news and lifestyle show.
Morning Drive will also be streamed live on Golf Channel's Web site via Golf Live Extra at golfchannel.com.
Georgia Southern secured the Sun Belt's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships by winning the league's team title April 21, and will compete at one of six regional sites around the country May 14-16. The sites are (host school): Gold Mountain Golf Club - Bremerton, Wash. (Washington); The Course at Yale - New Haven, Conn. (Yale); The Farms Golf Club - San Diego, Calif. (San Diego); The Rawls Course - Lubbock, Texas (Texas Tech); The Sagamore Club - Noblesville, Ind. (Ball State); UNC Finley Golf Course - Chapel Hill, N.C. (North Carolina).
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla., May 29-June 3, hosted by South Florida. Those 30 teams and six individuals will compete in an individual stroke-play format for 54 holes (May 29-31). The top 40 individuals and ties will compete in the fourth and final stroke-play round to determine the individual national champion June 1, and on June 2 (quarterfinals and semi-finals) and June 3 (finals), the low eight teams from the 54-hole qualifying will compete in match-play competition to determine the team national champion.
Georgia Southern's Kim Koivu became the eighth Eagle to win a conference individual title and the first since Drew Lethem, who won the SoCon in 2009. His score of 69-67-71=207 tied for the fourth-lowest round in Sun Belt championship history and was the lowest since 2008. Georgia Southern's team score of 279-275-295=849 was just three strokes higher than the Sun Belt Championship record of 846, set by South Alabama in 1994.
Georgia Southern has finished in the top-5 in four of six tournaments this spring and finished in the top-3 on four occasions. The Eagles will make their 23rd appearance in the NCAA Championships, the 12th in the 15-year tenure of director of golf Larry Mays and the sixth in the eight-year stint of men's coach Carter Collins.
