Softball Falls Twice to Texas State in Sun Belt Opener

Eagles and Bobcats return to the diamond on Sunday at 1 p.m.

STATESBORO, Ga. –   Georgia Southern dropped a doubleheader to Texas State in the Eagles' first Sun Belt Conference games in program history. The Eagles committed four errors in a 4-1 loss to open the day. A six-run first opened the door for a five-inning, 10-1 loss in game two.

GAME ONE – GS 1 – Texas State 4

Georgia Southern took a 1-0 lead in the third, but three Bobcat runs in the fifth, followed by a single tally in the seventh handed the Eagles' their first-ever Sun Belt loss. The Eagles capitalized on a leadoff walk to AJ Hamilton to get their only run of the game. Breanna McLendon drove Hamilton around from second with one out in the inning to put the Eagles up 1-0.

The Eagles got two outs quickly in the fifth, but four hits and four errors allowed Texas State to explode to a 3-1 lead. A manufactured insurance run in the seventh put the Bobcats up for good in the game.

Brooke Red fanned four, but allowed eight hits to take the loss in the pitching circle, falling to 3-6 on the season.

GAME TWO – GS 2 – Texas State 10

Texas State got four runs off four hits and an error in the first to take a 6-0 lead early. The Bobcats tacked on four more runs off four hits in the second to cruise to the run-rule victory.

Lexi Allen drove in both Georgia Southern runs with her double in the first inning. She plated AJ Hamilton, who went 2-for-3 in the game, and Morgan Robinson to cut the lead to 6-2 at that time.

Georgia Southern and Texas State return to Eagle Field on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. for the series finale. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Kids attending the game can run the bases for free after the final out. Admission is free to the game.
