Statesboro, Ga. – Georgia Southern Men's Tennis fell to the South Carolina State Bulldogs Wednesday 1-6. As a continuation match from earlier in the season, only singles was contested at the Wallis Tennis Center.
Kyle Hoffman earned the lone point for the Eagles in the No. 6 position.
A match that has been over a month in the making, South Carolina State and the Eagles began the match as part of the Troy Trojan Jamboree in February. The doubles matches were contested and the Bulldogs were up 1-0 when weather postponed the match.
Almost a month to the day later, the match continued at the Wallis Tennis Center as six singles matches took the court to fight for the coveted 4 points needs to clinch the match.
Albert Codina Sala fell to Martin Figura in the No. 2 position 2-6, 3-6, while
Joan Carles Alcala was defeated by Jakub Vitek 2-6, 2-6 at No. 5 to allow the Bulldogs to move to 3-0 in the match.
Stanislay Baco of South Carolina State earned the match-winner over
Christian Kerrigan at the No. 3 position 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.
Playing the match to completion, the Eagles continued to fight. Hoffman rallied after losing the first-set to take his match at No. 6 over Edgar Diaz 4-6, 7-6, 6-1.
At No. 4,
Jose Landin was defeated by Soufiane Mouline 4-6, 6-2, 0-1 and
Ristomatti Lanne was setback by Rodney Carey 6-7, 7-6, 0-1.
The Eagles (5-11) will return to action for a weekend home double-header Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the Eagles will celebrate Senior Day as they take the court at 2:30 p.m. against Bethune-Cookman. On Sunday, USC-Upstate comes to town for a show-down with the Eagles at 2 p.m. Sunday's match will also serve as the GATA game for student-athletes.
