Vanderbilt Leads Schenkel Invitational, Georgia Southern in Fifth after First Round

STATESBORO, Ga. – Henry Mabbett shot a 3-under par 69, and Georgia Southern shot 282 as a team in the first round of the Eagles' home tournament, the Schenkel Invitational, Friday at Forest Heights Country Club.
The teams will play 36 holes tomorrow to finish the tournament and dodge inclement weather that is supposed to arrive Sunday. Both the second and third rounds will be shotgun starts with round 2 slated to commence at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
Defending champion Georgia Southern (-6) is in fifth place, a stroke behind NC State (-7). Vanderbilt fired a 273 (-15) to top the team standings, and Auburn, which won the tournament in 2010 and 2011, shot a 274 (-14). Six-time champion Wake Forest (-9) is in third, followed by Florida (-5).
Kentucky and Iowa (-3) are tied for seventh and North Florida (-2) and Louisville are tied for ninth. Just a total of 13 strokes separate the top-10. The tournament features 11 top-50 teams in the country, according to Golfstat, and 12 individuals ranked in the top-100.
Ben Schlottman of Auburn shot a 66 (-6) to jump out to the lead in the individual standings, and Matthias Schwab of Vanderbilt and Cyrus Stewart of Wake Forest are tied for second after shooting a 67 (-5). Seven are tied for fourth at 4-under, and the group includes three players from Vanderbilt
Mabbett (-3) is tied for 11th, and Kim Koivu shot a 2-under 70 and is tied for 17th. Jake Storey shot a 1-under 71, and Matt Mierzejewski posted an even-par 72. Scott Wolfes rounded out the quintet with a 73.
Archer Price led four Georgia Southern individuals with a 2-under 70, and Charlie Martin shot a 73. Andrew Klasing shot a 74, and Caleb Morris finished with a 76.
"We got off to a rough start but battled back very hard and put together a solid round that has us in a good position," said Georgia Southern coach Carter Collins. "Hopefully, we can get off to a better start tomorrow and get rolling from there."
Mabbett birdied holes 4, 5 and 7 on the front and was 3-under after 11 holes. The junior birdied hole 12, bogeyed hole 14 and finished with four straight pars for a 69.
Koivu started the day with four straight pars and made the turn at 2-under. The senior birdied hole 11 to move to 3-under, but a double bogey on hole 12 dropped him to 1-under. He birdied holes 13 and 16 but bogeyed hole 15 to finish with a 70.
Storey got off to a shaky start with two bogeys in his first four holes but got rolling at the turn with birdies on holes 9, 11 and 12. He birdied hole 14 to move to 1-under and finished with four straight pars for his 71.
Mierzejewski got off to a rocky start and was 3-over after five holes before turning things around. The senior birdied holes 6, 9 and 12 to move to even and then logged four straight pars. He bogeyed hole 17 but recovered with a birdie on hole 18 to post a 72.
Wolfes posted five birdies in the front, including three in a row on holes 7, 8 and 9 to move to 5-under at the turn. The senior struggled on the back, with a pair of double bogeys, and posted a 73.
Price started on hole 10 and was 1-over when he made the turn to the front. The freshman played a clean front 9 with three birdies to finish with a 70.
Martin, who started on hole 10, was 4-over through his first 15 holes but finished with a flurry, posting a birdie on hole 7 and an eagle on hole 9 for a 73.
