Eagle now await postseason destination
MADISON, Miss. - Despite a furious third round that saw the Eagles shoot under par, the Georgia Southern men's golf team fell just short of advancing to match play at the 2026 Sun Belt Championship, held at Annandale Golf Club.
In the first round, Harrison Sewell led the way with a 70 (-2), but the team as a hole posted a 297 (+9). The squad improved nine strokes in round two, led by Trace Carter's 69 with Sewell and Morgan Blythe both shooting even par.
The Eagles came out hot in round three round, posting 10 birdies on the first five holes to surge up the leaderboard. The team got within three shots of the cut line for match play before rain and darkness suspended play for the evening. Returning to the course Thursday morning, the squad was four shots back of James Madison, who was in the clubhouse at even par, with 11 holes left. Despite a spirited effort, the Eagles couldn't make up the difference and finished the round with a 285 (-3).
Sewell led the way with a 211 (-4) to produce a top-10 finish (T-7) while Carter also finished in the top 10 with a 214 (-1). Blythe posted a T-18 finish with his 219.
Words From Coach Carter Collins: "I take full responsibility for us not meeting our goals; it was a very poor job of preparing the team by me. I am so proud of each of them for the incredible fight they showed to give us a chance. Tons of great golf was played and they have a lot to be proud of.
"This course demands accuracy off the tee and that wasn't our strong suit this week. I'm excited about what the future holds for this team and I will be a better coach at the next opportunity. Hail Southern!"
