Charlotte, Nc. – The Eagles fell Wednesday to the University of North Carolina-Charlotte 49ers by a score of 0-4. The match was played to clinch, as decided by the coaches before competition began, so it was a race to 4 points with any remaining matches after a team clinched left unfinished.
"The doubles point came down to the last match again and they played a little bit more aggressive towards the end," said Head Coach Alexander Koning. "In singles, they looked comfortable than us. They did a good job executing their patterns. We learned a lot from this road trip and we will come back home, work hard and gear up for our next home match."
The No. 3 doubles tandem of
Christian Kerrigan and
Joan Carles Alcala got the job done as they defeated Alex Calott and Nate Shenok 8-3. Moments later, however,
Kyle Hoffman and
Nico de Groof were setback by Vikram Hundal and Jack Williams in the No. 2 position 5-8.
Doubles would come down to the No. 1 duo of
Ristomatti Lanne and
Albert Codina Sala versus Kamil Khalil and Massalle Ferrer. The closely contest match would see the 49ers claim victory 8-6 and thus take the coveted doubles point.
Needing just 3 additional points to clinch the match, Charlotte went straight to work and ran the table on the Eagles. Hoffman was bounced at No. 3 by Ferrer 1-6, 3-6 while teammate Kerrigan was defeated by Calott in the No. 4 position 2-6, 6-7 (3-7).
The match-winner is credited to Charlotte's Hundal who got the win over Lanne at No. 1 4-6, 2-6.
With the 49ers in possession of the needed 4 points, the remaining matches were unfinished.
The Eagles (5-9) will return to the friendly confines as they take on South Carolina State University in a continuation of a match that began two weeks ago but was postponed due to weather. The show-down will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday March 22nd from the Wallis Tennis Center.
