TROY, Ala. – The Troy Trojans recorded the final out at the plate to take the series from the Georgia Southern Eagles with a 2-1 win on Sunday at Riddle-Pace Field.
Jeremy McGowan recorded two quick outs in the ninth inning before
Chase Griffin legged out an infield single to give Georgia Southern (12-9, 4-2) a base runner.
Hunter Thomas followed with a double to right center, but Troy (9-11, 2-4) threw out pinch runner
Cody Lanford at the plate to end the game.
"Troy executed the relay and made a perfect throw on the last play," Head Coach
Rodney Hennon said. "We got a big hit from
Hunter Thomas in that situation. We were running on contact with two outs and you have to give it a shot. It was a bang, bang play at the plate."
Lucas Brown held the Eagles to just one run over seven innings for his first win of the season. Brown (1-0) struck out two batters and allowed six hits in his first start of the season.
Aaron Mizell led off the seventh inning with his third home run of the season to score the Eagles' lone run of the ball game.
Connor Simmons allowed just two hits over 4.1 innings but took the loss after the Trojans scored two unearned runs on two errors in the fifth inning. Simmons (1-1) allowed one unearned run and struck out two batters in his fifth start of the season.
Brody Binder reached base on an error by the third baseman to lead off the frame and scored on a single from Logan Hill. Reid Long later scored on a throwing error by the shortstop that sailed past the first baseman and down the right field line.
"We have to do the little things better. We had two errors in the one inning they scored," Hennon said. "There were a couple of mistakes on the basepaths. We have to learn from some of these mistakes and do the little things better to come out on the other side of a close game."
Jason Richman tossed the final 3.2 innings and allowed one unearned run on four hits. The junior lefthander pitched two scoreless innings after the Eagles pulled to within a run in the seventh inning.
The Eagles remain on the road and will travel to The Citadel on Tuesday before returning home to host Arkansas State for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series March 20-22.
