Eagles Lose Twice in Final Day of FSU Renegade Classic

GS back home next weekend for 2015 Eagle Classic

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. – Georgia Southern Softball lost both games on Sunday in the final afternoon of the FSU Renegade Classic. The day opened with a 10-0 loss in six innings to No. 6 Kentucky. Sunday's second game was a 4-0 loss to No. 5 which went all seven innings. Georgia Southern is back at home next weekend for the 2015 Eagle Classic beginning on Friday in Statesboro.

"We have been battling all weekend," said Head Coach Annie Smith "We put the pieces together in the last game, and really settled down after the first inning.  We learned a lot this weekend that will help us as we prepare this team for the Sun Belt."

GAME ONE – GS 0 –  (6) UK 10 –  (6 Innings)

The Eagles dropped their second-straight run-rule defeat to the Wildcats on Sunday morning as the Eagles doubled their hit total from Saturday's meeting.

The Eagles, after allowing a run in the top of the first got two runners aboard when Morgan Robinson and Savanah Coon worked consecutive four-pitch walks to put a runner on scoring position. A fly out by A.J. Hamilton, making a return to her hometown of Tallahassee, flew out to end the threat and strand two runners.

Kentucky got another run in the second, followed by three more in the fifth to go up 5-0 as the Eagles came to bat looking for their first hit. Lexi Allen delivered the hit with one out, and reached second on a single later in the frame by leadoff hitter Taylor Rogers. Both runners would be stranded when the Wildcats worked out of the jam.

A three-run home run for Kentucky in the sixth capped a five-run frame which extended the lead to 10-0. Georgia Southern went quietly in the sixth as Kentucky took the six-inning run-rule win.

Senior Brooke Red got the start in the circle and went 4.2 innings, allowing five runs, three earned, off seven hits with three strikeouts. Freshman Kierra Camp worked the remaining 1.1 innings, giving up five runs, all earned, off three hits and two walks with one strikeouts.

GAME TWO – GS 0 – (5) FSU 4

Four Seminole runs in the first inning were enough to hand the Eagles their fourth loss of the season in Sunday's second game. A grand slam by Bailey Schinella with one out in the opening inning provided the balance of the scoring as the Eagles held FSU to half its total from Saturday's season opener.

The Georgia Southern offense was held hitless for the first time since the 2013 season as FSU's Lacy Waldrop threw her sixth career no-hitter. The Eagles got two runners aboard in the third when Allen was hit by a pitch and Michelle Mazur worked one of her two walks in the game. Hamilton was hit by a pitch, and Lindsey Wilcox earned another walk as the Eagles stranded five runners in the game.

After allowing four runs in the first inning, starting pitcher Heater Felt settled down in her collegiate debut, keeping the fifth-ranked Seminoles scoreless down the stretch while allowing just four hits. She went a total of 5.1 innings, leaving in the sixth after allowing two walks. Red came on and got the final two outs of the sixth. Felt struck out three batters in her outing.

The 2015 Eagle Classic brings Georgia Southern back to the friendly confines next weekend for a total of five games at home. Boston College, Binghamton, Tennessee Tech, and Campbell complete the field for the annual tournament which brings teams from across the country to Statesboro, U.S.A.
