Softball Drops Opening Two Games at FSU Renegade Classic

Eagles back in action on Sunday against Kentucky and Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. – Georgia Southern Softball was no match for No. 5 Florida State or No. 6 Kentucky on Saturday as the Eagles opened the 2015 campaign with two games at the FSU Renegade Classic from JoAnne Graf Field. The day opened with an 8-0 loss to the Seminoles in five innings, followed by a 9-0 loss to Kentucky in six innings to close the opening day of the season.

GAME ONE – GS 0 –  (5) FSU 8 –  (5 Innings)

Florida State posted single runs in the first, third, and fourth innings before adding five more in the sixth to take a run-rule win over the Eagles, 8-0, in the season opener for both teams.  The five-run fifth inning for the Seminoles included back-to-back doubles from Bailey Schinella and Korina Rosario and a game-ending two-run home run by leadoff hitter Jessica Warren.

Georgia Southern's offense came from Morgan Robinson who the only Eagle to reach base. She rifled a single to the gap in right, and reached second base later in the fourth inning off a passed ball.

Brooke Red went the distance in the pitching circle, striking out six Seminoles while allowing all eight runs, seven earned in 5.2 innings of work. The loss was the first time Red had dropped her first appearance of the season for Georgia Southern.

GAME TWO – GS 0 – (6) UK 9 – (6 Innings)

Kentucky's offense scored runs in the first, fifth, and sixth innings to streak past the Eagles 9-0 in Saturday's second game in Tallahassee. Kelsey Nunez was the star for the Wildcats, posting two RBIs and pitching a complete game in the circle.

The Eagles put runners on second and third with two outs in the first inning following a walk by Morgan Robinson and a single by Savanah Coon. Her hit to right was mishandled by the outfielder, allowing both runners to move up a base. Junior catcher AJ Hamilton then pulled a missile right at the third baseman which was caught for the third out, stranding two runners.

Nunez was dominant from that point forward, retiring the next 15 Eagles in order.

Freshman Kierra Camp made her collegiate debut as she got the start and went 4.1 innings and allowed five runs, all earned off eight hits with five strikeouts. Senior Marla Thompson worked the final inning of the day and allowed four runs off six innings.

The Eagles' trip to the Renegade Classic concludes on Sunday with two more games against the same foes. Georgia Southern battles Kentucky at 10 a.m. before facing the Seminoles at 3 p.m.
