Georgia natives McCullough and Stewart join squad in fall; Moya joins this spring
STATESBORO, Ga.- The Georgia Southern men's tennis team added three new commits this week during this year's signing period, including Jose Moya who joins the team in the spring and two in-state recruits who start in the fall.
"We are bringing in three great players and even better young men," head coach Sander Koning said. "Jose will add more depth for this spring, which will help the competitiveness of our team."
Koning nears his one year as head coach this February, and has strengthened the tennis program ever since, which the team hopes to showcase in January. He believes these three new additions will add to the program and give them a competitive edge, especially with Moya jumping right in come spring season.
Moya joins Eagle Nation from Lisbon, Portugal and moves to the States in January where he will begin practicing with the team. The two other fall commits—Muphy McCullough and Davis Stewart-- both hail from Georgia.
WHAT HEAD COACH KONING SAID:
Jose Moya from Lisbon, Portugal
"Jose is a great athlete, who has been a national champion under 12, 14 and 16 year old. He was also a member of the national junior team and reach a ranking of 372 ITF.
"I expect Jose to be an immediate contributor to our team and help the program. He is a great young man who loves the game of tennis. His match experience on a high level is great to have on our team, especially with our schedule and the conference we are in."
Murphy McCullough Johns Creek, GA
"Murphy has been an up and coming junior player, who has shown tremendous growth this past year. He is someone who knows his best years are still to come and I believe he will fulfil his potential because of his work ethic and determination."
Davis Stewart, Hahira, GA
"Davis is an outstanding young man, whose attitude fits really well into our team. He is a great competitor and I think he will push our current players to be better. He has a lot of energy and I know he will work hard to get better and help this program."
The Eagles first match is on January 16th at Davidson.
