Nora El-Shami, conference awards should come as no surprise. She's gained recognition for the past three years, earning spots on the SoCon All-Tournament Team and All-Freshmen team in 2012, the All-SoCon Second Team in 2013 and the All-Sun Belt First Team last season. With a team-high 30 points this season and 12 assists, which is good for tied for fourth in the nation, El-Shami clinched the All-Sun Belt First Team honor on Tuesday for the second year in a row to become just the ninth player in program history to snag conference honors in consecutive years.
Throughout her tenure at Georgia Southern, she's started 74 out of her 76 games and has led the team in points for all four years and assists for the last three. In addition, she's topped the team in goals for her first three years and comes in a close-second this year, trailing
Jennifer Wittick's 11-goal season by two.
This season, El-Shami has netted two hat tricks and was named to the preseason All-Sun Belt Team along with teammate
Melinda Lukas in addition to grabbing two Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week awards.
El-Shami has not continued to top the charts this season, but has also earned a spot in the record book. If the season ended today, El-Shami's 25 career goals would put her at sixth in school history. In points, she currently ranks fifth all-time with 78 in four years. Her 12 assists this season is tied for third all-time and her 28 total assists would put her at fifth in program history.
El-Shami looks to build on her previous success this weekend as her team heads into the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament on Wednesday. The Eagles face No. 2 Troy at 4 p.m.
