Landin makes it to the finals at NC State, Spiering drops in semis at home
STATESBORO, Ga.- The Georgia Southern men's tennis team had a strong showing again on Saturday at their home tournament and in North Carolina. At the Georgia Southern Championships, freshman Marvin Spiering advanced to the semi-finals after defeating Daiki Naka (SCAD) 6-4, 6-3. He carried over that momentum into his matchup against Lucas Plesky from Chattanooga, winning the first set but eventually dropped the match. Freshman Andre Johnson split sets with Nicklas Wingord of Chattanooga in the quarter finals; however Wingord prevailed beating Johnson in the last set 6-2. On the doubles side in Statesboro, Adam Brown and Nico de Groof lost a close match in the semi finals in the main draw, falling 4-6. At NC State, upperclassmen Chris Kerrigan and Rise Lanne dominated their doubles match 8-1 along with JC Alcala and Eddie Landin who won 8-3. Landin also made it to the finals in his draw, after winning 6-2, 7-5 in the semi-finals. WHAT HEAD COACH SANDER KONING SAID "The guys showed great effort today. Marvin (Spiering) played really well in the quarter final and was able to force his game upon his opponent. In the semi-final his opponent showed more maturity. Marvin battled really hard to get the first set, but then let up a bit and his opponent kept bringing it. It is a good lesson for Marvin, and I know he will do better next time around. "Andre fought hard in his quarter final match. It came down to a couple of points. His opponent also showed more maturity. At key points he was able to hit one more ball or place the ball better than Andre. "Nico and Adam played well in doubles. They played aggressive and had some great rallies, but with this format two, three points can make all the difference and that's what it came down to. "Overall we had a solid day, I am looking forward to having us finish the tournament strong tomorrow." WHAT JUNIOR NICO DE GROOF SAID "In singles I managed to make the opponent hit a lot of balls and show him that I was ready to run a lot. In doubles, even though we went a break up in the beginning of the match, a few volleys and returns can make a difference in only a few minutes. I'm satisfied with the way Adam (Brown) and I fought today but not with the overall result. We're getting ready for another battle tomorrow." WHAT EDDIE LANDIN SAID "Overall I think I played very effective, simple tennis. Iused my strengths all the way through in my singles matches. I played a really aggressive and fast-paced tennis; I didn't give any chances to my opponents to pick up their game. I felt that I was in control most of the games in my singles today and yesterday. I have to thank my teammates Chris Kerrigan, Joan Carles Alcala and Ristomatti Lanne who supported me in my games, especially in my last round, the semi-finals. They gave me so much energy when I was feeling hesitant." RESULTS GEORGIA SOUTHERN CHAMPIONSHIPS Singles- Saturday Nicklas Wingord (UTC) def.
