STATESBORO, Ga. – The week-long celebration of Paint the Town Blue continued early Wednesday morning with a balloon launch conducted by the students and faculty of Julia P. Bryant Elementary School and then moved onto the campus of Georgia Southern University with a True Blue Block Party at the University store in the afternoon.
Paint the Town Blue is an event designed to get all of Statesboro involved in the celebration of the beginning of the 2014 football season and for local businesses to show their support for Georgia Southern University. Local businesses began decorating their storefronts for Paint the Town Blue last Friday.
Georgia Southern president Dr. Brooks Keel was on hand for the balloon launch in the morning along with a number of Georgia Southern athletics staff and members of the football coaching staff. Eagle offensive lineman Manrey Saint-Amour and defensive lineman Justice Ejike spoke to the students with each delivering the message to "dream big" and that "anything is possible if you work hard in pursuit of your goals."
With GUS and Georgia Southern cheerleaders standing in the middle of a circle of around 300 students, a countdown from five was given, and the students let the balloons fly.
"We are extremely appreciative of the support shown by the community and our fans in participating in Paint the Town Blue," said Georgia Southern Associate Athletics Director Gleen Hart, who helped orchestrate Paint the Town Blue with aid of the Statesboro community. "The balloon launch was a great way to kick off the promotion and create excitement about the opening game against Savannah State on Saturday."
The festivities continued with older students in the afternoon at the True Blue Block Party at the University Store on the Georgia Southern campus.
Georgia Southern students as well as faculty and staff played games to win raffle tickets and prizes from Georgia Southern Athletics' partners. The event, co-hosted by the University Programing Board, also included music and free snacks to enhance the atmosphere outside the bookstore.
Paint the Town Blue week continues on Thursday with judging of the True Blue Spirit Business competition around town and the Downtown True Blue Tailgate which starts at 6 p.m.
Georgia Southern's first home football game of the FBS Era is on Saturday with Savannah State coming to Paulson Stadium. Tickets are still available for the 6 p.m. contest which can be seen live on ESPN3.com.
