UL Lafayette Sweeps Georgia Southern Volleyball 3-0

The Eagles host a pair of Sun Belt matches at Statesboro High next weekend.

Kat Minnerly collected 31 assists and 15 digs.
Box Score LAFAYETTE, La. – Sara Mossakowski posted 14 kills, eight digs and three blocks, and UL Lafayette erased late deficits in the first two sets to earn a 3-0 (29-27, 26-24, 25-16) Sun Belt Conference volleyball victory over Georgia Southern Saturday night in Earl Long Gym.

Jamie DeRatt posted 12 kills and six digs for Georgia Southern (1-13, 1-4), and Kym Coley tallied 11 kills and four blocks. Kat Minnerly had 31 assists and a team-high 15 digs to go along with two blocks.

Andrea Hole finished with six kills, 34 assists and nine digs for UL Lafayette (12-3, 2-3), while Kaylee Nemeth posted seven kills and three blocks.

The Eagles led 22-19 in the first set, but UL Lafayette rallied for a 4-1 run to tie the score 23-23 on a kill by Kelly Wiesmann. Georgia Southern fought off three set points and took a 27-26 lead on a Ragin' Cajun hitting error, but a serving error by the Eagles tied the score. Stacey Reilly and Nemeth put down consecutive kills to win the set and give UL Lafayette a 1-0 lead in the match.

Georgia Southern led 22-14 in the second set, when the Ragin' Cajuns made a run behind the serving of Hole. The setter served for six points, trimming the margin to 22-21. Megan Chevalier put down a kill for the Eagles, but UL Lafayette scored the next two points to tie the score 23-23. Another kill by Chevalier made it set point for the Eagles, but Wiesmann got two kills and the Eagles had a hitting error as the Ragin' Cajuns took a 2-0 lead in the match.

"I'm very disappointed in the result," said Georgia Southern coach Dustin Wood. "We had set point in the first set and were up in the second set and mentally, we couldn't finish. We played so well at times, and we need to find a way to maintain that level and prevent the lows. We are looking for more consistency from our young players who are getting valuable playing experience."

Leading 9-6 in the third set, UL Lafayette used a 6-2 run behind three kills from Mossakowski to open an insurmountable 16-8 advantage. Coley put a ball down and combined with Minnerly for a block as the Eagles scored the next two points, but that was as close as they would get.

Georgia Southern returns home to face Troy Friday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m. at Statesboro High School. The Eagles also play host to UALR Sunday, Oct. 5, at noon at Statesboro High.
