Eagles Drop Final Non-Conference Match at Jacksonville, 2-0

Georgia Southern opens Sun Belt play on Friday at ULM

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Georgia Southern Women's Soccer closed non-conference play with a 2-0 loss to Jacksonville on Sunday afternoon. Both goals came in the second half for the Dolphins as the Eagles open league play next week. The Eagles face ULM on Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. (ET).

"It was an even game," said Head Coach Brian Dunleavy. "Jacksonville is a good team. It came down to who finished their chances, and they executed in the final third while we did not. We created 17 shots with only 3 on goal. That's just not good enough, we need to have better composure and awareness. We lacked that killer instinct today."

Eagle netminder Katie Merson made five saves in the first half while the Georgia Southern offensive attack delivered eight shots in the opening period.

Jacksonville broke the deadlock in the 56th minute when Marie Weckhurst got on the end of a cross from Sope Akindoju just eight yards from goal to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

Just eight minutes from full time, Jacksonville's Brooke Comans doubled the Dolphins' advantage off an assist from Joelle D'Entremont.

Georgia Southern out-shot the Dolphins 17-16 on the afternoon behind a game-high five attempts from Jennifer Wittick. Junior Nora El-Shami accounted for three attempts with two on frame.

"As we move forward to Sun Belt Conference play, it's going to be about matching up physically and executing in the final third," said Dunleavy. "There is no doubt that we are good team and we play a very attractive style of soccer, but we need to find that edge, we are too nice right now."

The Eagles travel for their first Sun Belt Conference road swing this weekend with a trip through Louisiana. Georgia Southern faces UL Monroe on Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. (ET) and closes the weekend with a 1 p.m. (ET) match at UL Lafayette.
