AUBURN, ALA. – Georgia Southern's perfect 3-0 start to the season came to an abrupt end on Sunday afternoon as the Eagles took a 3-0 loss to Auburn in the finale of the Auburn Soccer Classic. Next up for Georgia Southern is the 2014 home opener on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Eagle Field against the Mercer Bears.
"Playing an SEC team on the road is a big challenge," said Head Coach
Brian Dunleavy. "Auburn is a strong team with fantastic athletes. They made life difficult for us today. We didn't have much time or space to play, but we held our own for large portions of the game, and we finished strong. Our players never stopped working, and we created a few chances as well. I'm pleased with the performance, and we can take some positives away from the day."
The Eagles earned second place in the Auburn Soccer Classic after Friday's win over Indiana. Sophomore forward
Melinda Lukas was named the tournament's co-MVP. She scored twice in the Eagles' win on Friday.
Auburn got their first goal in the seventh minute with a goal from Sophie Simantel. A corner kick by the Tigers bounced around in the danger area and came to Simantel who scored from five yards out.
Tori Ball engineered the second goal for the home side in the 30th minute when she got in behind the Georgia Southern back line. She beat the keeper 1v1 to put the Tigers up 2-0.
In the 76th minute, Auburn got its third goal of the night off the foot of Logan Beal. The unassisted tally from 22 yards put the Tigers ahead, 3-0.
Eagle netminder
Katie Merson made six saves in the game while the Georgia Southern offense posted three scoring attempts in the game.
The Eagles return home on Friday to face Mercer in the 2014 home opener. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Eagle Field. The contest can be seen live on GS All-Access at GSEagles.com.
