STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Men's Soccer opened preseason training camp today (Monday, August 11th) with a pair of practices at the Fair Road Training Complex. The morning session consisted of fitness testing and a split squad scrimmage. In the evening session, the team worked on defensive concepts in small-side games.
"We were rusty this morning, but with the number of new guys we've got, we needed to figure out where we are," said Head Coach Kevin Kennedy. "In the afternoon we did a little more teaching and worked on some defensive concepts."
Preseason Friendlies Set for August 23rd and 25th
Georgia Southern will play two preseason exhibitions before the 2014 season with games set against Savannah College of Art and Design, and USC Salkehatchie. The first game, against SCAD, will be played just north of downtown Savannah at the SCAD Athletics Complex on the 23rd at 7 p.m. The second exhibition is set for the 25th at Eagle Field from 7 p.m.
Home Opener on September 4th
The Eagles come home for the first time in 2014 on September 4th when Mercer comes to Eagle Field. The 7 p.m. game against the Bears is the first of six regular season home matches with three league contests scheduled for the friendly confines.
Tournament Time in Statesboro
Along with joining a new conference, Georgia Southern Men's Soccer will have another first in November of 2014 when the Eagles host the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. It will be the first time that the Eagles have hosted a postseason men's soccer tournament at Eagle Field.
Newcomers Get First Run Out
Monday's session was an introduction for the Eagles' 11 newcomers. The 2014 squad features nine freshmen as well as a pair of junior transfers.
International Newcomers
Two of the Eagle newcomers have an international background. Thor Sveinbjornsson is a freshman midfielder from Hafnafjordur, Iceland. Additionally, Pierre-Alain Andreolli was born in Paris, France, but played his youth soccer in the United States.
