SAINT AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Georgia Southern men's golf associate head coach Carter Collins shot a 68 in U.S. Open Local Qualifying at Marsh Creek Country Club Monday to take home medalist honors and advance to Sectional Qualifying.
Sectional qualifying is the second and final stage for U.S. Open hopefuls. Played over 36 holes in one day, sectional qualifying is a test of skill and endurance, with only a handful of available spots at each site - the number of qualifying spots is determined by the quality and quantity of the field at each location. There are 12 sectional sites this year - 10 in the U.S., one in England and one in Japan.
Collins will play in a Sectional Qualifier at a site to be determined June 2. It's the second time he has tried to qualify for the U.S. Open and first time he has made it through to Sectionals.
"I'm excited to be moving on in the U.S. Open Qualifying process," said Collins, who competed in the local qualifier with current Eagles Will Evans and Scott Wolfes. "To be medalist is a bonus, but the main goal is to move forward. I'm still awaiting my assignment to sectionals but it looks like either New York or Georgia."
Evans finished with a 71 and is the first alternate, while Wolfes, who advanced to Sectionals last year, shot a 74 to tie for 16th. Four players of 83 at the Saint Augustine qualifier advanced to Sectionals.
The game's most democratic major championship since 1895, the U.S. Open offers an opportunity to play on golf''s biggest stage alongside golf's biggest names. The two-stage qualification process helps decide a field of 156 players from some 9,800 entrants for the 114th playing of the national championship at Pinehurst No. 2, in Pinehurst, N.C., June 12-15.
Evans and Wolfes will be in the Georgia Southern lineup this week along with Hayden Anderson, Charlie Martin and Matthew Mierzejewski as the Eagles head to San Antonio, Texas, for the NCAA Regionals May 15-17, where they will take on 12 other teams and 10 individuals at Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
The San Antonio Regional is one of six in the country. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan., May 23-28.
