STATESBORO, Ga. - Six former Georgia Southern Eagles received their minor league baseball assignments for the start of the 2014 season, while Everett Teaford joined the LG Twins of the Korean League.
Teaford, who was battling for a spot on the major league squad in spring training, had his contract sold to the Twins by the Kansas City Royals. The former Eagle will take his game overseas and try to help get the Twins back to the Korean Series for the first time since 2002.
Teaford went 4-6 with a 3.49 ERA in 31 appearances at Triple-A Omaha last season and made one appearance on the Royals' major league squad. The lefthander was 3-5 with a 4.25 ERA in his MLB career.
Georgia Southern has two former players in Double-A and four in Single-A.
Former first round selection, Victor Roache, will begin his 2014 season with Class A Advanced Brevard County Manatees. Roache checks in this season as the fifth best prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers' farm system after finishing third in the Midwest League with 22 home runs a year ago.
Other Eagles in the minor leagues include Chris Beck (Birmingham Barons, Double-A), Justin Hess (Tri-City ValleyCats, Class A), Andy Moye (Huntsville Stars, Double-A), Matt Murray (Wilmington Blue Rocks, Class A) and Shawn Payne (Augusta GreenJackets, Class A).
Former catcher on the 2009 NCAA Regional team, Griffin Benedict, is back in his familiar as bullpen catcher role with the San Diego Padres.
The Georgia Southern Baseball team is back in action Friday as they start a three-game series at The Citadel. First pitch in the series is set for 6 p.m.
