Former South Carolina netminder joins the Eagles after stint at Furman
STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Men's Soccer has named Geoff Del Forn as Assistant Coach following the departure of Ben Freakley in the offseason. Del Forn joins the Eagles with six seasons of collegiate coaching experience, including the last two years at Furman where he has worked with the goalkeepers.
"I'm very excited to have a coach of Geoff's caliber join our staff," said Coach Kennedy. "Geoff played at a very high level, and he has an exceptional resume. Apart from being an outstanding coach, Geoff is also a terrific recruiter. He has a tireless work rate and I'm confident that he will be a very good mentor to the young men in our program. His coaching philosophy matches the culture of our program here at Georgia Southern, and I'm looking forward to working with him as we aim for a Sun Belt Championship this fall."
Del Forn has worked for the two seasons at Furman before coming to Statesboro, helping the Paladins reach the national rankings each season. The Paladins' top goalkeeper, Sven Lissek, recorded 10 shutouts in the 2013 season with a 0.74 goals against average. He also worked with 2013 MLS SuperDraft pick Walker Zimmerman
In addition to tutoring the goalkeepers, Del Forn was also responsible for the defensive system of play and helped to manage the recruitment process.
"Geoff spent 2 years with us here at Furman and was one of the reasons our goalkeeper, Sven Lissek had one of the best seasons in our history," said Furman Head Coach Doug Allison. "He is a truly hard working, energetic, blue collar coach that carries the height of integrity, loyalty and faith in everything he does. We will miss him at Furman, but we know he is under great new tutelage at Georgia Southern under my good friend Kevin Kennedy who is a fantastic mentor for young coaches."
Del Forn came to Furman after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant under head coach Greg Hooks at USC Upstate. During his final year in Spartanburg, S.C., he helped the Spartans improve their win total by four and coached goalkeeper Jason McCabe to All-Atlantic Sun Conference honors.
Prior to his stint at USC Upstate, del Forn served as recruiting coordinator and goalkeeping coach for two seasons at Washington & Lee University. The Generals earned a conference tournament bid and posted a 9-6-2 record in his first season in Lexington, Va.
At both Upstate and Washington & Lee, Del Forn helped form FCA Chapters. Additionally, he has worked at the Carolina Elite Soccer Academy as their Recreational Goalkeeping Director as well as an academy coach with their u11 and u12 squads.
As a player, del Forn played three seasons at South Carolina, earning Conference USA Academic Honor Roll as well as Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll over his career. He also played in the Professional Development League (PDL) with Atlanta Silverbacks U23 and trailed with the Puerto Rico Islanders.
A native of Gainesville, Ga., del Forn is married to the former Stephanie Wiltfang of Spartanburg, S.C. and the couple have a daughter, Blakely, born in September 2013.
