STATESBORO, Ga.- Georgia Southern honored numerous students and presented various awards to both students and faculty members today, during its annual University Honors Day Convocation. The event celebrates student achievements and successes during the academic year.
Among those recognized were Garrett Frye and Megan Ostrom, who were named the 2014 Male and Female Scholar Athletes of the Year.
The criteria for this award requires that each student-athlete must have completed at least four full time terms at Georgia Southern; they must have earned a varsity letter in their respective sports; and they must have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The award selection is 50% academic, 30% athletic, and 20% leadership and community service. The University Athletics Committe votes to select the award winners.
Frye, an offensive tackle from Cumming, Georgia, holds a cumulative GPA of 3.75. The junior Exercise Science major has been recognized for numerous academic and athletic accomplishments, including but not limited to: FCS ADA Academic All-Star Team Nominee, CoSIDA/Capital One Academic Division I All District, and All Southern Conference Second Team Offense in Coaches and Media.
"Garrett Frye is a consummate competitor, natural leader and tremendous ambassador for our Georgia Southern University football program," said Head Football Coach Willie Fritz. "Not only is he an excellent player who has earned respect and admiration of the entire team and coaching staff, he is also highly motivated, extremely dependable, and possesses an excellent work ethic. While Garrett works hard in the weight room and on the practice fields, it is truly the work that he does off the field and in the classroom that best exemplifies the student portion in the hyphenated student-athlete moniker."
Megan Ostrom, or "Meg-O", is a senior Exercise Science major with a 3.90 cumulative GPA. The St. Louis Park, Minnesota native plans to attend physical therapy school upon graduation, and has already been accepted to several Doctor of Physical Therapy programs. Ostrom will have completed over 600 hours while interning at Southern Wellness and Rehab physical therapy clinic before graduating this spring. Athletically, Megan currently owns the fifth fastest all-time record in the 100-yard breaststroke at Georgia Southern. She holds the 10th fastest 100-yard breaststroke time in the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA), as well as the 16th place time in the 200-yard breaststroke.
"Megan is one of the most dedicated student-athletes we have ever had in our program," said Head Swimming Coach Nathan Kellogg. "Her intense focus and determination is unparalleled. Quite simply, Megan has a distinct passion for excellence in the pool, in the classroom, and around campus and the community."
Both student-athletes will also be recognized at the Scholar Athlete Banquet on April 23rd.
