Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. – Georgia Southern Softball dropped a 2-0 decision to the Furman Paladins in Sunday's rubber match of the series. Furman got a pair of runs in the fifth inning to hand the Eagles their first series loss in league play in 2014. Georgia Southern is back at home for a midweek doubleheader against Jacksonville on Wednesday afternoon.
"It was a tough battle out there against a Furman team that fought hard," said Head Coach
Annie Smith. "Now we've got to go back to the drawing board and get ready for some important non-conference games."
Furman's Hannah Pace put the home side on top 1-0 in the fifth with a double to the gap in left which scored Natalie Clemmons from second. The Paladins added another run as starting pitcher
Sarah Purvis was lifted in favor of relief pitcher
Brooke Red. The junior reliever worked out of a bases loaded jam to keep the Furman lead at 2-0.
That run was enough for the Paladins to secure the win and improve to 9-5 in league play. Georgia Southern falls to 12-3 in the SoCon and 29-13 overall.
Purvis took the loss, falling to 16-7 on the year. It is the first time since March of 2013 that the hurler has taken losses in consecutive outings. She gave up two runs off four hits and five strikeouts. Furman's Lauren Collier picked up the win, her second of the weekend, to improve to 13-9 on the year.
Georgia Southern returns home for a midweek doubleheader against Jacksonville University on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. this weekend for a pair of games against Alabama and North Carolina.
