SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Georgia Southern guard Anna Claire Knight has been named All-Southern Conference by both the league's coaches and the sports media association, it was announced today.
Knight was named all-conference by the league's coaches, who select one team of 10 players. She was named second-team All-SoCon by the sports media association, which picks two, five-player teams. Knight is the first Eagle to be named to the SoCon postseason all-conference team since 2008, when Shawnda Atwood and Tiffany Brown earned the accolade.
Knight ranked third in the league in scoring with 15.8 points a game and added 4.8 rebounds and two assists a contest. The junior scored in double figures in 25 contests and tallied the program's first triple-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists at Samford Jan. 6. She has scored 458 points, making her the third Eagle since 1998-99 to score over 400 points in a season.
She was named SoCon Player of the Week Jan. 7 and Feb. 18, making her the first Eagle to be named SoCon Player of the Week twice in the same season since Nicole Newton in 2005-06.
"Our coaching staff has told Anna Claire since we got here that she's an all-league caliber player, and it's nice to see her earn this recognition," said Georgia Southern coach Chris Vozab. "She really asserted herself offensively and attacked with great confidence and consistency. She challenged herself to be better on the defensive end, and I think she has made significant strides in that area as well. We look forward to her continuing to improve and take her game to yet another level."
Georgia Southern opens play in its final SoCon Tournament Friday at 11 a.m. against Wofford in Kimmel Arena on the campus of UNC Asheville. The teams split the season series with each winning on its home floor.
