Softball Opens 2014 in Eagle Round Robin Tournament

GS faces No. 1 Tennessee, Oakland and Northern Colorado in the tournament in Statesboro

STATESBORO, GA.
– Georgia Southern opens the 2014 season this weekend with the 2014 Eagle Round Robin at Eagle Field in Statesboro. The Eagles start the 2014 Campaign on Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. against Oakland. No. 1 Tennessee and Northern Colorado are also appearing in the tournament which goes all weekend.

Saturday's pair of games has been named as "Daddy-Daughter Day" with buy one, get one free hot dogs from the concession stand as well as a Daddy-Daughter photo booth. On Sunday, fans will have a chance to play Softball bingo for prizes from Georgia Southern Athletics Marketing.

Georgia Southern has won back-to-back Southern Conference Championships and departs following this season for the Sun Belt Conference. Last year the Eagles went 32-30 and picked up the program's first-ever win in the NCAA Tournament when Sarah Purvis pitched a perfect game against Hampton.

Purvis was named SoCon Preseason Pitcher of the Year for the second-straight season by the league's coaches. Purvis posted a 1.83 ERA last season with 207 strikeouts and 18 wins. Brooke Red also recorded a 1.83 ERA and earned nine wins on the campaign.

Georgia Southern's leading hitter from last season, Shelby Morrill, returns to the lineup for her senior season with a .340 average while slugging at a .548 clip. Kourtny Thomas hit 12 home runs to lead the Eagles in power hitting. Both Morrill and Thomas were picked to the Preseason All-SoCon Team.

Recently the SoCon's coaches named Georgia Southern as unanimous favorites in their annual preseason poll.

Next weekend the Eagles travel to the Florida International Tournament in Miami, Fla.
